Service Corporation International (SCI) operates over 1500 Funeral Homes and over 400 Cemeteries.

Service Corporation International (SCI) operates over 1500 Funeral Homes and over 400 Cemeteries according to their website.

The largest funeral corporation in the United States issued it’s 4Q report yesterday.

It was good news for lower  average funeral cost.
“It is clear 2009 will be a challenging year for both SCI and the entire global economy.

Comparable funeral services performed in January and February of 2009 were significantly lower as compared to the prior year. Additionally, we continue to see a difficult economic environment for the consumer and uncertain financial markets which will reduce anticipated earnings in 2009 compared to 2008. Check out the story here.

At finance.yahoo.com it was reported.

Cemetery operations were more susceptible to economic and financial market conditions, with comparable gross profit decreasing $28.4 million or 59%, driven by lower preneed sales, lower trust fund income recognized and less cemetery property construction revenue.”

Cemetery operations income has fallen by over 50%.  What this means  is people are not buying Burial Property, or doing traditional funerals as they have in the past.(#of Funerals down).

Continual reports in the press indicate people are turning to cremation. Cremations are far less profitable  for corporations and funeral homes than a traditional funeral.

Cremation is less expense for the consumer. It allows more money to

go to the living. It brings down the average cost of a funeral.

Note: I have declared the average cost of a funeral in 2009 to be $8500.00 USD. It seems now everyday this figure is being reduced,

The Cemetery Needs to adjust to the Rise in Cremations

The Cemetery Needs to adjust to the Rise in Cremations

Funeral Fire-cremation- is lowering the average cost of a funeral in 2009. A recent report from Colorado Springs states that cremation  may be putting some  historical cemeteries  out of business. An (AP) report at koaa.com article states.

“The problem for Evergreen and Fairview cemeteries is that more people are choosing cremation over burial. The trend is even stronger in El Paso County, which cemetery manager Will DeBoer says has one of the highest cremation rates nationwide.

In 2007, 63 percent of the roughly 3,300 people who died in the county were cremated. And only 10 percent of the cremated remains were taken to Evergreen and Fairview cemeteries.”

This was verified in national reports from the two largest funeral- cemetery corporations: Service Corporation International (SCI) and Stewart Enterprises Inc.(STEI) have reported downturns in cemetery sales in their latest earning reports.

Be sure to let me know how you accomplished your lower cost funeral.

I have declared the average cost of a Funeral in 2009 to be 8,500+ USD. The average cost of a funeral in 2009 appears to be moving downward due to the economy and cremation.

Taking Chance is a Must See Funeral Movie for Every American family.  It was aired last Saturday night and has gained wide military exposure.

It is movie making at it’s best. It is funeral information of the Highest Caliber. It screams about the casualties of America’s War dead. It bleeds your heart. It Promotes Respect. This according to a USA Today Article.

“There is a power and beauty to restraint that seldom finds its way onto TV.”

“A small, almost perfectly realized gem of a movie, Taking Chance is also precisely the kind of movie that TV should be making. Its story — a real-life example of the military’s little-publicized policy of providing a uniformed escort for every fallen soldier — is too small for a wide-release feature film, even with star Kevin Bacon attached.

And yet it’s a story that should be seen in every American home, and one that, if you don’t know it, will leave you wondering why you don’t know it.”

Military Escorts are quiet unsung heros. So are those who have died for your freedom. You  may view the trailer to this movie with some unique personal commentary here. (You Tube Trailer) This is a  great flick on the courage of military escorts and America’s War Heros. The highest funeral cost  is the death of the person involved.

Funeral Cost News 2/22/2009

Funeral Cost News 2/22/2009

Funeral Cost News -On Sunday February 22nd it was reported that an Illinois Lake Zurich Resident stood up to a Funeral Home and the Illinois Funeral Directors Association on an IFDA Preneed Trust policy. Her protest allowed her to recover the principal the family prepaid for a funeral.

Under State of Illinois the Funeral Home must cover the Principal.

The family lost out on the interest on the original money. Because the Illinois Funeral Directors Association is under investigation by the Comptroller of the State of Illinois the family will not be able to pull  the principal out of the IFDA Preneed Trust. The family was originally told the principal could be pulled out of the Fund.

I warned folks about this sort of Scenario in my book:

Rest in Peace: Insider’s Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral

There is a chapter entitled:                                                                              Rest in Peace: Insider's Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral

A casket purchased on the Internet or from alternaive source makes the way for less than average Funeral Cost.

A casket purchased on the Internet or from alternaive source makes the way for less than average Funeral Cost.

If you lower the casket cost you usually will come in under the average cost of a funeral. Very early on  I stated that the there are three ways to lower average funeral cost. 1. consider cremation 2. get your casket on the internet or from an alternative source. 3. negotiate with the funeral director.

As the economy continues in it’s fragile state, lower cost caskets are becoming available. Under the national law the funeral rule the funeral home has to accept the casket from an alternative source. Only in a few states require that you purchase funeral goods and services through a funeral home.

Recently in Cincinati there is the  Main Street Casket Store in Ohio.. A quality casket can be purchased for $999.00 USD. It is a sign of how lower cost, less than average cost funerals are coming on the scene.  You can view the story here: Click Here to read full article
