The National Funeral Directors Association(NFDA) has reported to the Bakersfield Californian Newspaper that they (NFDA) has conducted a survey of funeral directors. Fifty percent of the funeral directors surveyed said they had a decrease in Sales between 2007 and 2008.
In the article a spokesman for the National Funeral Directors stated that the funeral industry is not recession proof.
From the Bakesfield Californian
“There seems to be a general perception that funeral service is a recession-proof profession, but nothing could be further from the truth,” said Emilee High, communications coordinator for the National Funeral Directors Association.
“A survey done recently by the association(NFDA) found that almost 50 percent of funeral directors nationwide saw a decrease in sales from 2007 to 2008.”
We have been reporting a Funeral Industry decline here. There seems to be a seismic shift taking place as more folks turn towards cremation, and people are cutting back on traditional funeral services.
It will interesting to see the full survey results.
The bottom line is this. If you choose cremation you will come in under the average cost of a funeral. If You go with traditional services you will pay more than average funeral cost.

The reporter made an error in interpreting the survey report we shared with her. The survey report showed that almost half of the respondents (48.9%) have experienced decreases in 2008 PRENEED sales compared to 2007.
We did not ask about over funeral sales in our survey – only preneed sales.
