Katherine Gerrits deals with the dead. But it’s the decisions made by the living that she tracks. Her job as Chippewa County coroner involves making sure people died of non-suspicious causes before their bodies are cremated.
“We have to view the body before they cremate it,” she said.
Gerrits keeps track of cremation numbers, which rose 63 percent from 95 in 2004 to 155 last year. And the 2009 figure is much higher than the recent average of 120 a year, she said.
“It’s cheaper. It’s just the way to go nowadays,” Gerrits said of cremation.
