The Funeral Industry is increasingly on edge…about funeral cost. Folks are demanding to pay Less for a funeral. The 11 Billion dollar Funeral Industry has taken hit after hit over the past several years as the 30,000 funeral directors in the United States are coming unto harder times. The Death Industry has not proven to be immune to Cuts  in Consumer spending.

Snippet:

“As …well-detailed San Francisco Examiner article outlines, consumers increasingly are looking for burial bargains and other costs savings. Societal trends and financial pinches are changing the way we say farewell, creating opportunities for some providers and pinching others.  This USA Today story  notes that cemeteries are suffering just like any other form of real estate, and that individuals are stuck with pre-need plots they purchased years ago and now wish to cash in.  (Who knew there was such a thing as Plotbrokers.com and its catchy slogan: “Because you have a life.”)

Demand for crematory services is rising, leading to regulatory and “not in my backyard” concerns, as ….Riverside, Calif. Press-Enterprise article points out.”

A woman from Hawaii has tried her own version of the movie “Get Low”. Over the weekend she attended her own funeral.

This scerario is the exact subject of a new movie with Sissy Spacek, Robert Duvall, and Bill Murray. Murray is the Funeral director. The situation in the movie is a little more complex than the Lady From Honolulu.

Snippet:

For years, townsfolk have been terrified of the backwoods recluse known as Felix Bush. People say he’s done all manner of unspeakable things — that he’s killed in cold blood; that he’s in league with the Devil; that he has strange powers — and they avoid him like the plague. Then, one day, Felix rides to town with a shotgun and a wad of cash, saying he wants to buy a funeral

In a recent blog post Todd Van Beck has insulted the Funeral Industry, and American Consumers-specifically the Baby Boomers and The American Funeral Consumer.

Here is a snippet from his post.

“The overall results of the Gallup Poll, which really focus in getting the opinions of the common ordinary folk, you know the Archie and Edith Bunkers of the world, who are the substance of the funeral profession, have concluded that Nurses literally shine in the public’s ethics opinion and Bankers have fallen from ethical grace in a big way – surprise of surprises.

Anyway here are the top ethical careers for 2008, in rank order:

1.      Nurses

2.      Pharmacists

3.      High School teachers

4.      Medical doctors

5.      Police officers

6.      Clergy

7.      Funeral Directors

8.      Accountants”via www.iccfa.com

Todd Van Beck has given us a substandard blog post by calling Funeral Directors “Ethical”.

1.Firstly the Gallup survey was done before the exposure of the 1 Billion Dollar National Prearranged Services Scandal and the 100+ million Dollar IFDA(Illinois Funeral Directors Association)Preneed Trust Scandal where money was taken from Funeral Directors and Funeral Consumers. Many members of the public still are not aware of these tragic events.

2.Secondly no American individual or couple alive today would count it a complement to be called ARCHIE and EDITH BUNKER.

3.Thirdly There is a legitimate place in the Funeral Industry and for Funeral Directors to speak up for the Funeral Consumer.

Congrats Mr. Beck Your Blog and Website has made into the top ten anti funeral consumer websites on the internet.

This is not a personal attack on Todd Van Beck but a strong objection to an inappropriate blog post and the TERM: ANTI-FUNERAL MUCKRAKER

Here is a  Preneed, Prepaid Funeral Scam Dust up.
Sometimes Preneed, Preneed, End Of Life Insurance Scams go on for Years.and often the governmental authorities, death care regulators side with the funral scammers not the consumers.

In 2003, 80 year-old Donna Roberts prepaid for funeral arrangements with the Free Funeral Home of Coshocton, Ohio. Recently she  changed her mind about funeral providers and when asked for a refund of the more than $7,000, she was refused the money until another funeral home actually provided the service. Her complaints got her nowhere and the funeral home’s response was backed up by the Ohio Attorney General’s office.

The Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors has issued a notice to Kenneth Free, owner of the funeral home, that they determined there was reasonable evidence to “propose to suspend, or revoke, the licenses” of Free and the funeral home for “unprofessional conduct” for refusing to transfer the pre-need contract.

Lawyers for the Free Funeral Home say the current law allowing for pre-need contract transfer was not in effect when Roberts purchased her contract, is not retroactive, and his clients have done nothing wrong. Even though her contract also holds no provisions for transfer, Free Funeral Home may decide go ahead and transfer the contract simply to avoid costly litigation.

The lower cost funeral is king in Memphis, Tn-Not Elvis. This is according to the local business journal, commercial appeal.com. This is simply another indication of traditional funeral industry decline.

People in Memphis, around the nation paying less for Funerals

Proving that not even death is recession proof, Tacker’s business has taken a hit as customers become more frugal in burying their loved ones.

He estimates his clients are spending about 15 percent less on funerals.

Revenue for funeral homes across the nation is down, as people choose less-expensive caskets, opt more often for cremation and cut back on viewing times and wakes, according to a report by the National Funeral Directors Association.

It’s similar to what privately owned Memphis-area funeral homes are seeing.

The room where Tacker and his wife, Cindy, showcase their casket selection at the Stage Road funeral home, doesn’t get many visitors these days.

“Almost nobody wants to go into the selection room and pick a casket,” Cindy Tacker said.

Many customers are instead choosing alternative containers, which are made of anything from unfinished wood to cardboard, and run about $85 compared to a casket starting at around $1,000.”via www.commercialappeal.com
