” Hundreds of Haitians — some still bandaged, many in tears — gathered in the parking lot of the destroyed cathedral here Saturday for the funeral of the archbishop of Port-au-Prince.

Revered as a humble servant of the poor, Msgr. Joseph Serge Miot, 63, died as so many others did: crushed by his own home. Priests and his relatives emphasized that his death was one among multitudes.

The vicar general of the main cathedral in Port-au-Prince, Msgr. Charles Benoit, died with him, and on Saturday the two clergymen lay in a pair of white caskets just a few hundred yards from the rubble that killed them.

Bishop Lafontant, meanwhile, implored the country’s Christians to see the cataclysm as an opportunity for growth.

“God had something to say and he said it here,” the bishop said. “He did it because he wants Haiti to become a new country.”

For most, however, grief and exhaustion still reigned. As the hearse moved out of the parking lot, the sister of Monsignor Benoit slapped the window, cried and screamed.via www.nytimes.com

Sadly US Funeral Directors have sent a message to Haiti-LET YOUR DEAD ROT. Funeral Directors are needed  in that poor nation yesterday, not only for dignified burials|funerals but for sanitation and safety.   The dead  are lying in the street  covered in flies. Bodies are being run over by cars.

The message came through the National Funeral Directors Association(NFDA) the number one  funeral directors association in the USA. Their statement said they would wait and see what kind of assistance is needed!

They said communications in the country were out and there are safety issues for those traveling to Haiti. They said they are dealing with Health and Human Services and Homeland Security. Even if there is government resistance, by their own code of ethics funeral directors have an obligation to be there. If the Obama administration said no go, the funeral directors should have insisted on yes!

With Regrets and apologies  here to the nation of  Haiti here is the NFDA’s  delayed lame response.

“Numerous members of NFDA have expressed interest in traveling to Haiti to assist with DMORT operations and to help local funeral directors preserve the dignity of those who died. At this time, NFDA staff is working with the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Haitian Consulate

to determine the type of assistance needed from the funeral service community and when it might be safe to travel to Haiti.

Unfortunately, all communication with Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital and hardest hit by the earthquake, has been cut off. In addition, NFDA has been unable to reach an NFDA-member firm located near the capital.” via nfda
