There are reports coming out of New York City that some in the Funeral Homes are using Pet Visitations as a loss leader to get clients.

This is indication of hows  hard times may be for Funeral Homes in Funeral Industry. Difficult times. to Say the least.

Pet "Visitation"and Pet Burial are a loss leader for some funeral homes.

“A media story on National Public Radio recently reported on housepet burials in the New York metropolitan area. According to the piece, basic interment at area pet cemeteries runs about $1,500, although big sticker mausoleums have also been built to provide eternal rest for housebroken animal companions. Ostentation thy name is Spot.

There is also a trend toward visitation of the deceased dog, cat, budgie or iguana at human mortuaries. It was described as a loss leader for the funeral homes, which reportedly charge a couple hundred bucks for a tasteful service, all the while figuring a way to incorporate the pet hereafter into their line.”-

Do You know what will happen to Your Digital Assets When you die?

Digital(online) assets are important in many funerals today. I predict in the near future they will be a part of every Funeral Arrangement. It used to be that all your records kept on paper, but today they are mostly on a computer, and the internet.

We haven’t truly seen the breadth of this issue play out yet, but I’m telling you, this is a huge problem,” said Chicago lawyer Karin C. Prangley, who has spoken on the topic at conferences. “Ten or 15 years ago, someone could go into your house and find the paper trail if you die. Now the paper trail is online.”via www.washingtonpost.comWhen Someone Dies Accessing their records is very  important

We’re in an era now where people are really going to have to pay attention to what their online assets are,” Toeman said. “Five years ago, that terminology — digital assets — didn’t even make sense. Now it does.via www.washingtonpost.com

Is a career in Funerals Fun?

Is a career in Funerals Fun?

Interest in Careers in Funeral Service is up 20%. This according to Stephanie Kann Program Director at Worsham College, “The Harvard of Mortuary Schools”. In spite of enrollment numbers the  promise of a secure job at a funeral home is simply not the case.

From blog.taragana.com

Tough economic times — from the Great Depression to financial dips — have precipitated an increase in students interested in funeral sciences. Stephanie Kann, program director at the Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Illinois, said interest in mortuary science historically has spiked when the unemployment rate hits 8 percent. It saw a 20 percent increase this year over last.”

But not so fast. Cremation rates are up. Preneed sales are down 50% according to a NFDA survey. News reports and the National Funeral directors Association state that folks are paying less for Funerals. The major funeral corporations income is down 25%. The Funeral Industry is hurting. It is not recession proof.
