A green light has been given to Home Funerals in Minnesota with new legislation that has been passed this past week. Obstacles to doing a Funeral at home in that state have been removed.
‘Minnesotans can grieve their dead without embalming them, and then invite neighbors and friends into their home for the funeral, under legislation Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed into law this week.
The change allows families to skip embalming and hold a public viewing or service up to four days after the death.
Until now, if anyone other than family and close friends attended, the state required the body to be embalmed.
The new law also allows children to be in the presence of an unembalmed body, which had been illegal, and expands the types of transportation that families can use to move bodies. The old law required the body be in the same space as the driver, essentially mandating use of a hearse.
“We had a lot of old laws on the books that were based on superstitions and inaccurate information,’’ said State Rep. Carolyn Laine, DFL-Columbia Heights, chief author of the bill. “We allowed some home funerals, but only for family and close friends. Well, now we can invite the not-so-close friends and skip the embalming.’’
The law, which goes into effect Aug. 1, requires the body to be on dry ice if more than family will attend the service.”
It was recently reported that a hearse caught fire on the way to a funeral. This is not a joke as an article appeared in the press. It is a more common experience to have the Engine on the Funeral Hearse Die on the way to a Funeral.
Recently a Hearse caught fire on the way to a funeral
Snippet:
“A hearse delivering a body to a funeral caught fire Friday afternoon when sparks from a front tire flattened in a collision sparked a blaze. The driver was later arrested on suspicion of driving drunk, the California Highway Patrol said.
The hearse belonged to Mandel Funeral Services in Vallejo and the driver was identified as 55-year-old Daniel A. Mandel, the owner, CHP Officer Marvin Williford said.”-
Ouch a Hearse or the Funeral Coach is expensive!

In Philadelphia wrong person in casket-Worst Possible Funeral
Recently in Philadelphia the wrong body was mourned by 200 people. The deceased was in the the correct clothes. But it was not “Kevin Tex Roberts” the retired Truck Driver. It was someone else. In spite of protests from the wife, the funeral employee stated that’s how they look when they die..
“When the funeral director finally admitted to the family that there was a “mix-up,” right before the funeral was about to start, more havoc followed:
Relatives cried and children were hysterical. A 19-year-old had a seizure and a woman had an asthma attack. Both were brought to the hospital.
The man in Roberts’ casket appeared older than Roberts and relatives were told that man had been killed, said Wearing. Roberts’ body had been in a casket at the Francis Funeral Home in West Philadelphia, which is run by the same funeral director, 6ABC reported.
The horror didn’t stop there:
When the funeral employees finally located and brought the real Roberts, his legs were hanging out of a tilted casket when the hearse door was opened.
Wearing told the Daily News that the funeral employees must have driven so fast, hitting bumps, so that the casket opened.”
This is kind of mistake is unacceptable. One should always hold the Funeral Director accountable throughout the funeral process.
