Residents Blocked The Building of A funeral home and the parade of funeral vehicles through their neighborhood.
Local residents in Arlington Heights, Illinois blocked the World’s Largest Funeral Corporation, Service Corporation International from putting a large Funeral Home in their neighborhood. On Monday night the Village Board of Arlington Heights unexpectedly reversed it’s zoning ruling and stopped SCI from building on a funeral home on a residential street.
All SCI(Service Corporation International) had to to was shift the Funeral Home location back into the Cemetery and they would have had the Funeral Home near the residential area. The SCI “Memory Gardens Cemetery” backs up against the residential area.
In the end SCI in their usual manner proved to be inflexible. The usual threat of taking their business to another town was made repeatedly throughout the zoning process.
“A proposal to relocate Lauterberg & Oehler Funeral Home from its current location on Northwest Highway to Memory Gardens Cemetery – which seemed like a sure thing after an Arlington Heights village board meeting two
weeks ago – was denied at Monday night’s meeting.
Service Corporation International, owner of both the cemetery and the funeral home, was seeking a zoning variance to build in the cemetery. The area is zoned only for residential development.”
SCI is known in the funeral business for their strong arm tactics and the up selling their clients in their time of grief. In 2009 they have been plagued with severe financial problems and are the targets of multiple lawsuits charged with abusing the dead and mistreating families..
