The super retailer Walmart  is now in the Funeral Business. This could be a major blow to the casket companies and an already distressed funeral industry. Walmart is selling caskets ONLINE and acting as an assistant funeral director.

Contrary to the popular belief the funeral industry is recession proof, the super retailer move indicates a demand for discounted caskets. Many funeral homes in the face of decreasing sales have increased their prices and  have been reluctant to embrace lower cost  funerals. Not to embrace the low cost funeral now may put the traditional funeral home out of business.

This move is a a plus for the Funeral consumer and negative for traditional casket companies, specifically, Batesville Casket Company, and the York Casket Company.

If you area consumer you can check out  Wall Mart’s supply of Caskets here.

The book Rest in Peace Insiders Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral outlines and  predicts an explosion of online caskets.

Caskets are only sold online and are limited to Geographic areas with specific conditions.

This service will help the consumer with lower funeral cost and funeral expenses.

Come in under the average cost of a funeral, rent the casket

Come in under the average cost of a funeral, rent the casket

Renting a Casket can help you come in under the average cost of A Funeral. This can be effective in  achieving a low cost funeral. After the casket rental and visitation there is usually a cremation. A little known scenario that is often used is a closed casket  visitation with a n urn inside! the public does not have to know! Usually the family is informed.

From  www.wctv.tv

“Funerals can deal a huge blow to a family’s finances and a few Valdosta funeral directors say there are some people who are cutting funeral costs by renting caskets.

Local funeral directors say families who decide to rent a casket and cremate a loved one rather than buy a casket and bury them can save a few thousand dollars on funeral costs.

For each individual service, cardboard inserts are placed inside the casket.

Only the casket’s outer shell is reused.

Once the service is over, the inserts are removed and taken to the crematorium along with the body.”

Funeral Cost News 2/22/2009

Funeral Cost News -On Sunday February 22nd it was reported that an Illinois Lake Zurich Resident stood up to a Funeral Home and the Illinois Funeral Directors Association on an IFDA Preneed Trust policy. Her protest allowed her to recover the principal the family prepaid for a funeral.

Under State of Illinois the Funeral Home must cover the Principal.

The family lost out on the interest on the original money. Because the Illinois Funeral Directors Association is under investigation by the Comptroller of the State of Illinois the family will not be able to pull  the principal out of the IFDA Preneed Trust. The family was originally told the principal could be pulled out of the Fund.

I warned folks about this sort of Scenario in my book:

Rest in Peace: Insider’s Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral

There is a chapter entitled:                                                                              Rest in Peace: Insider's Tips to the Low Cost Less Stress Funeral

In Order to Become Comfortable Thinking about Death Your Thoughts Must be Changed.

In Order to Become Comfortable Thinking about Death Your Thoughts Must be Changed.

The first thing one has to to do to come in under the average cost of a funeral is to think about death. That is something that our minds just do not want to do.

In order to bring  our minds around to acceptance and comfort with the thought of death our mind needs to be tricked or changed.

The best way to trick your mind and get down into your subconscious is to laugh. Yes one needs to laugh about death. It best  is to send in clowns or at least  one  clown with a key to help with your thoughts about death.

No this does not mean that you invite a clown to a funeral although many

clowns usually show up.

You need to find the Right clown with the Right Key to change your mind so you are comfortable with thoughts about death. It is not all that difficult. The clown though must be a part of your generation.

After you become comfortable thinking about death, coming in under the average cost of funeral is not all that difficult. Laughing is the key.

What does a Funeral Cost? What  does the average funeral cost? This is very hard to determine. A Funeral is a combination of many individual choices. Every one’s choices are different. So essentially there is no average funeral. The median cost of a funeral can be referred  to as the average cost of  a funeral. Your cost is determined at your arrangement conference.

The median

Funeral Cost/Funeral Arrangement

means equal dollar  number above and equal number below. Industry analysts say it is $10,000 USD. The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) say it is $7,323.00 USD.

The NFDA  states that the average cost  in the  South to be $7,807.00USD.  They call the average in the the Pacific Mountain Region to be $6,514.00 USD.

Due to the economy folks are opting for the lower cost funeral and cremations. However in order for costs to significantly come down, the cremation rate needs to be above the current 35% nationwide. Also third party casket purchases need to be more than 15% (be sure to get your casket on the internet). In spite of economic pressures for lower cost funerals, people over 70 want the traditional event and  to pay a little less.

With all these factors taken into consideration I have declared the average or median cost of a funeral in 2009 to be $8,500.00+ USD.
