Minnesota may pass legislation allowing families to care for their own dead. There is a bill that would allow the public to care for their own dead. This is a step forward for the home funeral movement and provides a lower cost funeral alternative for the general public. As economic trouble in the nation continues more and more folks are returning to lower cost funeral(s), and for some the home funeral.

“Carolyn Laine, DFL-Columbia Heights, is sponsoring a bill that would allow families to wash, dress and transport their dead, keep them on dry ice for several days and to host larger viewings than permitted by current law.

The measure, which has a bipartisan group of 22 co-sponsors, passed the House Health Care and Human Services Policy Tuesday on a voice vote. It next moves on to the full House.

The law( Minnesota) now requires bodies to be quickly embalmed or cremated after death and limits who can view unembalmed bodies.

Recently widowed Heather Halen, of Minneapolis, said her ability to wash and dress her husband continued the intimacy they’d shared during his life. She kept his body at home and invited family members to visit.”via www.startribune.com

Death, state Rep. Carolyn Laine, said Tuesday is frightening.

“We are always afraid of the unknown,” she told fellow lawmakers. But the fear — and the law — should not prevent families from “reclaiming” the care of their dead loved ones, she said.

Wal Mart selling Caskets online  is a tipping point for the the Funeral Industry. Things are tipping away from the  Traditional Funeral and towards the lower cost funeral and funeral expenses that are less.

Wal Mart selling caskets maybe a turning point for the traditional funeral home

Wal Mart selling caskets maybe a turning point for the traditional funeral home

There is a strong case for a traditional funeral home demise. Cremations are to hit 38% this year in the USA. The cremation rate is going to continue to grow maybe exponentially. Alternative funerals are exploding. Americans are facing the end of prosperity as we know it. No end to unemployment is in site.

The hard reality is you do not need a funeral director to select a casket. Fed Ex the one who deliver the Wal Mart Caskets have a next day delivery damage free just like Batesville Casket Company!

The funeral director argument about THE  TRADITIONAL FUNERAL HOME offering a low cost casket is bogus, A presswood cardboard casket is not a metal one!

Take note a low cost funeral home can provide the same if not better experience than a traditional one.

Traditional Funeral Homes are going the way of the full service gas station.
The statement that Wal Mart is selling Caskets is not a threat is a poor defense of the Statusquo for Funeral Homes.

New Jersey Funeral Directors Raise costs

New Jersey Funeral Directors Raise costs

There is funeral squeeze on funeral directors Because of increase costs of traditional Funerals in New Jersey and surrounding states, Funeral Directors have grown Funeral Prices by 12 percent. This is not good for funeral prices in the traditional funeral business.

Traditional Funeral Services in New Jersey and surrounding states have risen. But the demand for the lower cost funeral continues as Death becomes more expensive.

Having to raise funeral and expenses is not helpful when people are demanding to pay less.

“Even dying is getting more expensive.

The average price for basic funeral home services in New Jersey and surrounding states has risen an average of 12 percent over the last year, according to an annual study released Tuesday.

The pricing increases are the result of several converging trends, including a growing consumer preference for low-margin services like cremations and immediate burials,”

Now Is the right time to negotiate a Lower Cost Funeral

Now is a good  time to find your local funeral director willing to discuss lower funeral costs. You can come in under the average cost of a funeral. Many folks are somewhat surprised to discover that they do not have to accept the options and the prices offered. A lower cost funeral can be negotiated.  In many cases now the funeral home is expecting you to come in and ask for lower funeral expenses. There are several reasons  for this.

Washington DC newspaper outlines steps to a Lower Cost Funeral. Story appears in print and on the net.

Washington DC newspaper outlines steps to a Lower Cost Funeral. Story appears in print and on the net.

Recently The Washington Post stated that folks are choosing low cost funeral options. People are choosing less than average funeral cost. I have declared the average cost of a funeral to be $8500.00+USD in 2009  This is trending downward.

“More often than not, cost-conscious families still want the same funeral service but they look to save money on what undertakers call “merchandise.” In addition to less expensive coffins, the bereaved can pay less for the vault in which the coffin sits. In rural Virginia, vaults are not required in many private country cemeteries.

Some families have eliminated visiting hours to cut costs. Although embalming remains routine in the United States, it’s generally not required, and more people are forgoing it. Graveside services sidestep the expense of a church or the rental of limousines to transport close friends and family from service to cemetery. The cost of cremation, which can eliminate the price of a coffin, can vary by several hundred dollars from one establishment to the next.”

So what can be learned about coming in under the average cost of a funeral.

1.Lower the cost of Funeral Merchandise.(choose less expensive merchandise, caskets, urns vaults)

2.Reduce or eliminate visitation hours.

3.Eliminate church and limousine expenses.

4. “Have a “Graveside”Service” Only
